Second Week of Advent—December 7, 2014

second_10844c (1)Scripture Readings:

Mark 1:1-8, 2 Peter 3:8-15, Psalm 85: 1-2, 8-13, Isaiah 40: 1-11

Furrows, be glad. Though earth is bare,
One more seed is planted there:
Give up your strength the seed to nourish,
That in course the flower may flourish.
People, look east and sing today:
Love, the Rose, is on the way.

“People, Look East” by Eleanor Farjeon
The United Methodist Hymnal, No. 202

Questions for Reflection:

Why would Jesus be described as a rose?

In what ways have you experienced the sweet fragrance of new life in Christ?

Who has made a way for you to know the love and grace of Christ?

How are you making a way for someone to experience the love and grace of Christ?

Prayer: Gracious God, help me to experience the sweet fragrance of Jesus in fresh, new ways this Advent.  Tend the gift of grace you have planted in me and use me to make a way for others to know your love and grace. Love, the Rose, is on the way. Amen.

Advent Wreath Litany for the Second Week of Advent

Sing: O Come, O Come Emmanuel UMH 211

Voice 1: In this season of preparation we are invited to rejoice!

Voice 2: You are coming to us, Lord Jesus, and we rejoice!

Voice 3: Our rejoicing leads to nurture as we tend the gift of grace which has been planted in us. Jesus the Christ has planted this gift and grows the grace.

Voice 1: People, look …

Voice 2: We look for the God who comes to us ‘as a floweret bright amid the cold of winter.’

Voice 3: We look for the God who comes to us ‘with the fragrant sweetness of new life.’

Voice 1: People, look …     (Light two purple candles.)

Voice 2: Look, the light is lit.

Voice 3: Look, Jesus, the Rose, is coming.

Voice 1: Please join in singing to invite and welcome him in.

Furrows, be glad. Though earth is bare, one more seed is planted there. Give up your strength the seed to nourish, that in course the flower may flourish. People, look east and sing today: Love, the Rose, is on the way.
