People, look east. The time is near
Of the crowning of the year.
Make your house fair as you are able,
Trim the hearth and set the table.
People, look east and sing today:
Love, the Guest, is on the way.
Prayer: Awaken me, O God! Help me to stay alert and prepare for Christ’s coming. Love, the Guest, is on the way. Amen.
On this First Sunday of Advent, we consider how we are preparing for Christ’s coming. In what ways will we welcome Christ, the Guest? Today, we remember that Jesus is the Light of the World. Like the stars that light our way in the dark, Jesus is the light of our lives. Because we know that Love, Jesus, the Guest, is at the door, we get ready to welcome Him! During worship we wrote a way that we would prepare for Jesus this Advent on stars and then attached the stars to the door frames as we left worship as a reminder that we are ready for Jesus, the Guest.
Advent Wreath Litany for the First Week of AdventVoice 1: The word “Advent” means “an arrival or a coming.” Until the One who is coming arrives, we are waiting. Voice 2: But our waiting is not a sit-on-our-hands sort of waiting; it is an active and lively waiting. Voice 3: Advent waiting calls upon us to “Look” for the one who is coming and prepare for his arrival. Voice 1: People, look … Voice 2: Look for the God who comes to us in great power and splendor. Voice 3: Look for the God who comes to us in great humility and meekness. Voice 1: People, look… (Light one purple candle.) Voice 2: Look, the light is lit. Voice 3: Look, Jesus, the Guest, is coming. Voice 1: Please join in singing as we prepare our hearts to welcome him in.
