Tomorrow, December 2, is the first Sunday of Advent, marking the beginning of our Christian year. Advent is a season of preparation, a time for waiting, watching and preparing our hearts and our lives to celebrate God’s greatest gift of love to the world. The focus of this special season of our faith journey is the celebration of the birth of Jesus and the anticipation of the return of Christ the King. Advent is a journey of hope reflected in the many ways the community of faith comes together to rejoice and celebrate the revelation of God in Christ.
The congregation of Faith United Methodist Church has a long tradition of creating an Advent devotion book, written by the people of Faith UMC, designed to lead, guide, and inspire us during this special season of our faith journey. The devotions traditionally begin on the first Sunday of Advent and continue through Epiphany on January 6.
~Faith is a Journey~
Faith United Methodist Church is a congregation on a journey seeking to be a dynamic, growing community that gathers around Christ in Word and Worship to pray, learn, care, share, and serve together. Sharing our stories as we journey into faith is one of the characteristics that makes for a vibrant faith community. This Advent, as you reflect on the significance of Christ’s birth, we invite you to share your faith story.
~Join the Conversation~
Faith’s Advent devotions will be posted here daily on our new Faith Formation Blog, Journey into Faith, as well as on our website, www.faithumchurch.org. (Printed copies are also available if you contact our church office.) The blog will give us the opportunity to share questions and comments regarding this year’s Advent devotions and activities. We invite you to join the conversation as we share our stories on the journey of faith! As you read each day’s devotions or participate in the Advent activities, we invite you to share your experiences. Simply click on ‘leave a comment’ or ‘reply’ to share your story of how God is at work in your life as you are waiting and watching for Christ this Advent!A NOTE FROM THIS YEAR’S ADVENT COORDINATOR When asked to help with the Advent Book this year, I prayed that God would be a big help – and of course He was. Without Him, it would not get done. He is the ultimate Guide and Editor – in- Chief. He is definitely in charge. Kathy, Faith UMC’s Director of Christian Education & Spiritual Formation, had some great ideas that we decided would make this Advent season fun. We let the writers pick their own scriptures, we included illustrations, we included activities for everyone to do. We also included writings from all ages – from young children through adult. What creativity we have in the church. I am constantly amazed at what can happen when the Holy Spirit takes over. I thank each and every person who submitted something. I also thank each of you for taking the time to read this book. May we each be enlightened by this Advent Book. Read it, do the activities, and have fun as we embrace this season of anticipation and expectation. May we all be blessed by the God who started it all. Pam Wig 2012 Advent Book Coordinator
